I’ve been very caught up with other things lately. Mostly my mind has been on my job search. It’s like that time as a senior in High School when college applications are out and you feel so distracted by very active waiting.
My interviews at the College Art association seemed to go well. They seemed like productive conversations. I liked all the folks I met and each school had things to recommend them. Now I’m hoping for second interviews.
While at CAA I went to a session on teaching art online. The general approach of the speakers was really alienating for me. Most focus was on how to control students, as opposed to how to help them learn. There were many concerns about student participation and also whether the students actually do their own work. The most telling thing was a “humorous” anecdote that the biggest population of online users is prison populations. That fact seemed to frame every other metaphor used in the panel.
Whether The Social Sculpture continues as an entity or not, I’m not interested in structuring learning that way.
Perhaps, since there is no set schedule or shape for this project, maybe it’s time to re-think it. Besides the online resource for prisoners, what other metaphors can we use to get The Social Sculpture moving? What kind of projects can we do collectively? What kind of fun can we have?
